WRANGELL – ST. ELIAS
America’s largest national park. I know, I was surprised to hear that as well, but at over 13 million acres (roughly the size of Yellowstone, Yosemite and Switzerland!) it is the undisputed leader. Located east of Anchorage (4-5 hours by car), it normally sees less than 80,000 visitors per year. So if solitude and quiet is what you are after, this one might be a great choice. Those lower visitor numbers might also give you a better chance at spotting a black bear, brown bear, dall sheep, moose, caribou, steller sea lion, or dozens of other species that make this park their home.
